Do you ride a motorcycle? If so, motorcycle safety should be at the top of your mind each time you ride. Motorcyclists are 27 times more likely to die in a car crash than those riding in cars.
Looking for ways to stay safe as you cruise on your bike? Here are some motorcycle safety tips to keep you safe as you hit the open road.
1. Gear Up
Sure the black gear might look good, but you want drivers and pedestrians to see you from a distance. Try some brightly colored gear like a jacket or helmet. You can find some yellow suits and jackets at just about every gear shop.
In addition to brightly colored items, you want to make sure you have extra protection with the right gear. Jeans provide minimal protection if you crash, so you want something with extra reinforcement like leather pants, jackets, and boots.
You should never ride without a helmet. Make sure it is DOT-approved. A helmet can reduce the risk of death by 37 percent and also reduce the risk of head injury by 69 percent!
2. Always Check the Weather
Snow, rain, and ice can compromise your drive. Driving in these conditions is hazardous because a motorcycle has less visibility and less traction than a car. If there is a chance of rain, best to save the ride for another day.
3. Be Safe When Traffic Slows
If you notice traffic moving slowly up ahead, make sure you move to the right or left of the car in front of you. You can then have an escape route if the driver behind you cannot stop in time.
When you are stopped, have your clutch in and bike ready in gear. Watch those mirrors so you can move quickly.
4. Inspect Your Ride
Before you hit the road, you should take a look at your bike. Check out the mirrors, lights, and tire pressure. Look for any leaks, loose bolts, or other potential issues.
Always be diligent with maintenance and regular care including oil changes, brake pads, tires, and suspension adjustments. Do not delay fixing any issues. If you need to wait to fix something, do not ride in the meantime.
5. Ride Defensively
You can’t assume drivers always see you. Ride with your headlights on, and stay out of a driver’s blind spot. Make sure to signal well in advance of any turn, and watch for vehicles turning at intersections.
Make sure you constantly scan your environment as you ride. This means checking mirrors, blind spots, the road ahead, and looking left and right.
6. Follow Traffic Rules
Make sure you do not tailgate. Stay at least four seconds away from vehicles in front of you. This gives you enough time to stop.
Be sure to obey the speed limit. It takes you longer to stop the faster you go.
7. Take a Class
Take a formal riding program and get licensed. You can learn some valuable riding techniques and sharpen up your riding strategies.
